ABOUT THIS PROJECT

The idea of a craft brewery in Komatipoort came to us after we had moved to live in the town nestled against the bottom of Kruger Park. We quickly noticed that there is an opportunity to provide both the local community and more importantly the tourism sector with a venue where quality beer and food can be enjoyed in a relaxing venue.

The town of Komatipoort is eight kilometres from the Kruger National Park Crocodile gate and 80 km from Maputo on the Indian Ocean. The property that has been earmarked for the establishment of the brewery is situated six kilometres from the Kruger gate and is on the road between Komatipoort and the Kruger making it a convenient stop-off point to quench thirst and enjoy a meal. The property will house the brewery, a thatched pub & beer garden, and a lodge and cottage all surrounded by a beautiful bushveld garden.

Against this backdrop, we became aware that we could establish a brewery that could become an icon in the Lowveld. For a lucky few we could also offer lodge accommodation on the property.

THE BACKGROUND

Normally an undertaking of this nature would be self-funded. However, the Barker family has recently had to endure a Covid related setback in that Spencer, Brett’s Dad, has lost his employment due to the liquidation of the company he worked for. This comes on the back of two previous retrenchments and a small business closure since 2012. Having to restart in life this many times has had its effect on the family finances. Besides this, it is a reality in South Africa that elderly white men are finding it extremely difficult to find employment nowadays.

Not wanting to allow our situation to dictate our future and have come up with this idea over six months ago, we set about putting together a business plan, looking for premises, and doing marketing surveys to test the viability of the idea. The business has looked more and more promising the more detail that is added. However as good as this may be, traditional bank finance methods do not allow for funding of start-ups.

We, therefore, decided to use a crowdfunding platform to generate the start-up capital needed. The difference is that we are offering investors a reward of greater value than their pledge thereby repaying the investment with interest. Together with the prepaid holiday reward in a world heritage wildlife area, investors will have the knowledge that they have committed to a good deed and will be honoured on a founding member’s wall in the pub.

THE PLAN

The pub will be set up around providing consumers with a unique opportunity to enjoy Kraft beers and drinks together with pub meals of high quality.

There will be a strong focus on producing quality products that are full of flavour and embody strong artisanal techniques, giving the consumer food and drinks that can be savoured.

Customers will be able to book either of the two on-site lodge accommodation options. The four-bedroom lodge will be set up as a plush ranch-style farmhouse able to accommodate 8 people. The one-bedroom cottage will be set up as a cozy couple’s getaway. Both will have self-catering facilities if patrons do not wish to eat out at the pub.

Mission statement

To provide the consumer with craft beers that embody traditional flavours born out of passionate artisanal skills, prepared in a high-quality manner that have a consistent taste.

Goals and objectives

Establish an iconic brewery with an onsite pub and beer garden on the main road to Crocodile gate, Kruger.

Achieve sales and distribution of beer products through all the major bars and restaurants in the Lowveld.

Help staff achieve personal growth through training and development.

As has been discussed in the video and as shown in accompanying photos, drawings and rendering there is a fair bit of work needed to re-establish the property. The outbuildings need renovation and alterations and additions before the brewery equipment can be moved in. The lodge and cottage need refurbishment and equipping with furniture and fittings. The pub needs a kitchen added on with existing bathrooms converted to ablutions. Finally, the garden landscaping needs attention and the beer garden gazebos need to be added. Furnishing and equipping the pub is finally needed.  This is where the crowdfunding investment will be used.

The business plan shows that a tipping point investment of R 400 000 is needed to cater for initial/ startup cash flow projections. However, an ideal investment amount of R 800 000 will enable an accelerated introduction of all facets of this business plan. This will be funded through crowdfunding with every pledge receiving a reward of equal value that will be redeemable 12-24 months after the pledge is made.
