THE BACKGROUND STORY

The History of the Kranshoek Horses Overview, read more about it here...

After our devastating Garden Route fire crises here in Plettenberg Bay, on 7 June 2017, we were approached by the local Kranshoek rural settlement, to help them remove and save their horses, as soon as possible, to a safe area where they would not be caught in the flair-ups again.

Also the herd had no proper fences keeping them safe from predators, dogs or horse thieves before the fires, but now that their few and far between fences and grazing burned down, nothing prevented them from going on to the main roads, where horses have been hit by vehicles in the past.

Our Kranshoek Horse Team is made up of Volunteer's whom struggle on a daily basis to get to the horses for general care, hauling feed and equipment, and moving a horse is just as challenging. In order to secure the welfare and a sustainable future for this special native South African herd, we have started working with their Owners to teach them the importance of responsible Horse Ownership and Horsemanship skills. This has proven hugely successful over the past 4 months, and the children love all the new possibilities which the future hold for them and their horses. The Griekwa people are of a proud horse heritage and we can already see great potential in some of these kids to pursue an Equestrian Sport or related career.

The children are from a disadvantaged background and at risk. Our vision is to educate them in the equestrian field and channel their energy for the greater good of not only their own lives but for those animals in their and their community's care. We need an all-rounder vehicle urgently which can load heavy loads, transport feed, tow a horsebox in an emergency and transport the team in and around Kranshoek when needed, as lack of transport is a huge problem for us currently, so we would like to have the freedom to collect them regularly to help, to train, visit their horses, do work with their horses.

Al ten (10) of our kids own a horse and we can see them and their horses coming into their own as we move forward, so we need to keep the momentum going as some are teenagers, and we cannot afford to lose their interest in these critical years of development, due to this transport challenge.

Hyundai H100 Bakkie required to transport horse feed grass bales. This mini truck will also play a vital role serving as workhorse for horse transport, erecting fences, building of the yard, promotional gear and for transporting horse/rider equipment.

Project FAQ

Why are we crowdfunding?

  • Answer is to grow awareness for our project

Why do we want a Bakkie?

  • To transport the Horse Feed (Grass Bales) to the horses

Another reason why do we need a Bakkie?

  • To transport all kinds of Horse equipment from point A to point B

Another reason why do we need a Bakkie?

  • Although there is a draught currently, we started getting rain again and are located in a tropical climate, for which Plettenberg Bay is well known for going through all four seasons in one day.
  • People who work with horses know too well that emergencies, injuries, accidents or any animal for that matter, does not wait for weekdays or working hours to require immediate attention.
  • We had 7 horses urgently requiring our help again this morning when they got out as we still do not have fences.

What is the worst that can happen to the horses in Kranshoek?

  • At the moment, over and above feed shortage, getting on to main roads and been stolen to ride or race by Juveniles, they eat rubbish and destroy other residents gardens, then get abused.
  • Another incidence happened last week where we could not get to a horse on time, and this horse was taken away by Law Enforcement and the Owners have 7 days left to pay the fine (up to R5,000.00 per horse!), and if they do not, this horse we were notified that this horse will go on auction where anybody can bid, including slaughterhouses.
