Our Story: Building a Home for Rural Youth and Horses

In the hills of Inanda, horses are part of everyday rural life. They are used for transport, cultural gatherings, and rural horse racing. Many young people grow up seeing horses, hearing their hooves on the dirt roads, and watching local races with excitement.

But very few of these young people ever get the opportunity to learn to ride properly, train with horses, or explore the wider equestrian world.

At Tlalokan Equestrian, we believe that talent and passion should not be limited by geography or financial circumstances. Our mission is to open the door of the equestrian world to rural youth in eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, starting right here in Inanda.

How It Started

Our journey began with a simple idea: introduce rural learners to horses in a safe, structured, and educational way.

Through our school-based horse riding programmes, we started visiting local schools and introducing learners to horses for the very first time. Many of these learners had never touched a horse before, yet within minutes their fear turned into curiosity, excitement, and confidence.

The response from schools, parents, and the community has been incredible.

Young people who once only watched horses from a distance are now learning:

  • Horse care and grooming
  • Riding balance and posture
  • Horse behaviour and communication
  • Responsibility and discipline

For some learners, sitting on a horse for the first time is a life-changing moment.

The Challenge We Face

While our school programmes have been successful, they come with a limitation: learners can only interact with horses during school hours and on school grounds.

Equestrian sport requires time, repetition, and consistent exposure to horses. Without a dedicated space where learners can continue training, their development is limited.

We also want to create a place where young people can come after school, spend time outdoors, and find a positive environment away from daily pressures.

That is why we are raising funds to build a 5-berth horse stable.

The Vision: A Rural Equestrian Development Space

The 5-berth stable will become the foundation of a small but powerful community equestrian hub.

This stable will allow us to:

  • Safely house and care for horses used in training
  • Run after-school horse riding programmes
  • Host weekend and holiday riding sessions
  • Teach horse care, stable management, and responsibility
  • Create a calm outdoor learning environment for youth

More than just a stable, this will become a space of growth, mentorship, and opportunity.

For many young people, this space will provide solitude, focus, and a connection with nature that is often missing in their daily lives.

Why This Matters

Horse riding is often seen as a luxury sport, accessible mainly to wealthy communities due to the cost of horses, equipment, and facilities.

In rural communities like Inanda, these opportunities simply do not exist.

Yet the passion, bravery, and natural connection with horses that rural youth have is incredible.

By building this stable, we are creating a pathway where young people can grow into:

  • Skilled horse riders
  • Future equestrian athletes
  • Horse trainers and handlers
  • Stable managers
  • Professionals in the equine and agricultural industries

Some may even go on to represent their communities in equestrian sport one day.

What Your Support Will Build

Your contribution will help us construct a 5-horse berth stable, including:

  • Safe horse stalls
  • Basic feeding and watering infrastructure
  • Tack and equipment storage
  • A working yard for grooming and saddling horses

This infrastructure will make it possible to run regular training programmes beyond school hours and grow our impact in the community.

A Place Where Dreams Can Begin

For many rural children, horse riding feels like something that belongs in another world.

But with your help, we can build a place where that world becomes real.

A place where young riders can learn patience, courage, discipline, and care for animals.

A place where the next generation of rural equestrian talent can begin their journey.

Purpose and Use of Funds

This stable will enable us to:

  • Provide structured horse riding training for rural youth

  • Expand participation in rural horse riding and horse racing development
  • Host community training days and youth development programmes

Project FAQ

At Tlalokan Equestrian, we believe that horses have the power to change lives. Our rural youth riding programmes in Durban, within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, KZN, South Africa. We have already introduced many learners to horse riding — a sport that is normally out of reach for rural communities due to the high cost of horses, equipment, and facilities.

Why Crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding allows us to bring together a **community of supporters who believe in youth development, rural opportunity, and the power of horses to change lives**. Building equestrian facilities and running youth riding programmes requires significant resources, and traditional funding sources for rural sport development are often limited.

By launching a crowdfunding campaign, we invite individuals, businesses, and horse lovers to **be part of building something meaningful for rural youth iwithin the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality**.

Crowdfunding helps us to:

  • Raise the funds needed to build a **5-berth horse stable** for youth development
  • Create awareness about **rural equestrian opportunities**
  • Allow supporters to contribute directly to **youth empowerment through sport**
  • Build a network of partners who believe in growing the rural equestrian sector

Every contribution, large or small, becomes part of building a **permanent space where young riders can learn, grow, and develop their skills**.

What is the Plan Once 100% Funding is Received?

Once the funding goal is reached, the project will move into **implementation and construction phases**.

The funds will be used to:

  1. **Prepare the site and begin construction**
This includes ground preparation, drainage, and foundation work to ensure a safe and durable stable structure.
  2. **Build the 5-berth horse stable**
Construction of the horse stalls, roofing, stable fittings, feeding areas, and ventilation systems to ensure proper horse welfare.
  3. **Develop supporting infrastructure**
This includes the tack room, feed storage area, water supply, lighting, and a safe stable yard where horses can be groomed and prepared for riding sessions.
  4. **Equip the facility for youth programmes**
Purchase essential horse care equipment, grooming tools, and training materials needed for the Rural Youth Horse Riding Development Programme.
  5. **Launch after-school and weekend riding programmes**
Once the facility is completed, the stable will become the base for ongoing horse riding training for learners from local schools in eThekwini.

The stable will allow us to expand beyond school-only sessions and create a permanent equestrian development space where rural youth can continue learning, training, and building their skills with horses.

Ultimately, the goal is to create a sustainable rural equestrian hub that nurtures young riders and strengthens the horse riding culture in our community. 🐎
