ABOUT THIS PROJECT
The 2021 tour consists of 14 players and two staff. It is 13 nights away, and 11 matches with a break between festivals. The highlight of which being the Cape Schools Festival.
Unfortunately these days, the festival levies cost R43 200, the additional accommodation costs are R33 120 and additional meals R12 000. At the moment the cost per person is R7057, which means half of our squad are unable to afford the tour costs.
We have had already had three fundraising activities, but haven't managed to dent the costs yet. We are hoping our community can assist all our young cricketers to travel.
THE BACKGROUND
We need to be consistently tested against the very best in South Africa. We will then always improve our own standards, and keep pushing our learners towards achieving their potential. That in turn, always has a financial constraint and burden on our parents.
We are always incredibly sensitive and aware of the cost implications and have always worked extensively to fundraise in an attempt to lower the overall cost to parents.
Our 1st XI cricket side participates in a local festival and then participates in the Cape Schools Festival just after that. After which, our season kicks off into full gear with local fixtures.
THE PLAN
For Graeme College to continue playing at the highest level, we would need financial assistance to travel to the country's big festivals. If we do that, we will edge closer to becoming a powerhouse within the province, but also nationally.
Covid has left many families in precarious economic situations and we don't want to add to that pressure. Graeme College is also a real South African school with a massive economic disparity. We refuse to let any cricketer miss a tour because of financial constraints.
Graeme College is a proudly South African School based in Makhanda, Eastern Cape. We have always punched above our weight category in all sports.
We have just learned that Liselihle Maphekula has been selected for the South African u18 Rugby side. He is also in the touring 1st XI cricket side.
On the same day, Cricket South Africa confirmed that Aphiwe Mnyanda has been selected in the SA u19 Cricket side. Ironically Aphiwe will miss this tour, due to his new national commitments in the Provincial T20 Knockout competition.
Graeme College celebrated its 150th year in 2023. We are a proud CSA Focus School and a CSA Blue Chip Status School.
