We, Abigail Mallows and Sarah Milborrow, are third-year health psychology students at UCT. This project is part of a research assignment for our health psychology course.

This assignment requires us to create and implement a health intervention programme in a nearby community and reflect on the reasons for implementing and the outcomes of the intervention.

As females, we understand that menstruation is a large part of every woman's life and that it can affect their daily routine.

It has been found that many female learners miss school during menstruation which will impact negatively on their education and their futures but also negatively impacts the economic condition of South Africa. We hope that menstrual health management education will improve school attendance and alleviate the negative impacts of this.

OUR GOAL

The project goal is to create and implement a menstrual health intervention programme including two focus group discussions and an educational seminar focusing on female health and education at school level.

We will be partnering with a community school and Subz Pants and Pads’ Project Dignity to provide re-usable menstrual pads and menstrual health management education.

You can be a part of this project by funding the menstrual management kits.

The Subz Pants and Pads menstrual management kit we will be providing to the female learners costs R150.

Each kit is a drawstring bag containing:

  • two panty (onto which the pads are fitted)
  • six re-usable menstrual pads
  • six seal-able plastic bags

Individually, each panty and pad costs R20 and the drawstring bag costs R10. With your funding, we will be able to provide a kit to each learner.
